Every Hero Has a Story

Summer Reading has begun!  Without a lot of spare time to come up with a display, I decided to use my friend Microsoft Publisher to whip up a "comic strip" display that summarizes our programming this summer, since the theme is "Every Hero Has a Story" and who doesn't like comics??!

Each panel of the comic was printed out on 11x17 paper and backed with construction paper.

Fizz, Boom, Read!

Our Library's theme for this year's Summer Reading Program is "Fizz, Boom, Read!" with an emphasis on all things related to science.  We will be encouraging reading and activities with a focus on STEAM (a framework for learning based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).  There is a huge push for STEAM (or STEM) in schools and libraries across the nation.  (If you backtrack to my first-ever blog post on Shelf Indulged, you will see that the last Library I worked at had a Summer Reading Program theme of "Full STEAM Ahead... which I also made robots for because they are just the cutest.)

For our large display board in the hallway outside of the Chidren's Department, my very talented colleagues made a bulletin board display involving robots, test tubes, atoms, and DNA sequences!  I made the banner above the board, which reads, "Get Ready For A STEAMY Summer!"  It's being carried in the air by cute little handmade flying robots, upon whom I have not yet bestowed names.

Full STEAM Ahead!

With a Summer Learning Program theme of "Full Steam Ahead", (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), a display of reading robots only seemed appropriate.  The children helped me name them Marty, Milly, and Moe (Moe is the "little brother" with the glasses).  Each time the kids returned to the library they seemed genuinely excited to see the robots.  I loved making these little guys... and I loved the input that I got from the kids while working on them during my desk time!  Getting to show my creative side during projects like these is only one of many reasons why I love my job!
